Physicians Endoscopy began operations in 1998 when it was organized as a Delaware limited liability company. Barry Tanner and Karen Sablyak are the company’s respective CEO and CFO. They joined the company in 1999 and are considered to be the founders of PE. They co-wrote the business plan that has evolved into what exists as Physicians Endoscopy today. “PE’s journey started as a little company sitting in a small office writing a business plan with one critical mission—to be the leader in supporting the single specialty of gastroenterology. It was a bold idea to dedicate an entire organization to only one specialty, but it was our strategic vision to do one thing and do it really well”, said Barry Tanner, Physician Endoscopy’s CEO.
Today, the success of Physicians Endoscopy and its nearly 60 ambulatory surgery centers and over 535,000 GI procedures per year has been in part to its employees and its partners. Furthermore, PE currently has over 275 employees and 600 gastroenterologist partners. “When I truly think about growth, I don’t particularly think in terms of office space, employees or revenue. Instead, I think back to our core mission and the celebration of each center we built and each partnership we achieved, and with that ultimately how it all translates to saving lives. Each center, each physician, each staff member has impacted patients across the country—saving hundreds of lives and loved ones,” said Mr. Tanner.

- 1998: Company founded with the acquisition of two west coast surgery centers
- 1999: Executive team assembled
- 2000: First de novo ASC opened
- 2002: Billing division launched
- 2006: First three-way hospital joint venture model accomplished
- 2009: Investment in information technology
- 2010: Expanded operations/clinical division
- 2012: Entered acquisition market completing six transactions in first year
- 2017: Frontier Healthcare joined PE adding fifteen more centers to the company’s portfolio. PE Gastro practice management division introduced.
